Overview

Sri Lanka is one of those rare destinations that genuinely has something for every member of the family. In a single trip, you can stand in front of ancient temples, walk through misty tea estates, watch elephants bathe in a river, snorkel in turquoise waters, explore a 400-year-old Dutch fort, and watch sea turtles hatch on a protected beach. All within a country smaller than the size of Karnataka.

Itinerary

Day 01Arrival in Colombo — Pinnawala — Kandy (2 Nights)

  • Arrive at Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), Colombo — Sri Lanka’s main international gateway
  • Clear immigration and meet your dedicated Fleego driver for a private, air-conditioned vehicle transfer
  • En route to Kandy, stop at the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage (approximately 90 minutes from the airport)
  • Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is one of the most extraordinary wildlife experiences in Asia — a government-run sanctuary where orphaned and injured elephants are rescued, rehabilitated, and cared for
  • Watch the herd of 80+ elephants bathe in the Maha Oya River during the morning or afternoon bath sessions — babies and gentle giants together in the river is a sight your family will never forget
  • You can feed the elephants, observe them up close, and learn about the conservation work being done here
  • Continue the scenic drive to Kandy through lush green hillsides and small Sri Lankan towns
  • Arrive in Kandy by evening, check in to your hotel
  • Kandy is Sri Lanka’s cultural capital and a UNESCO World Heritage City — it sits at an elevation of 500 metres in a beautiful lake-surrounded valley
  • Evening at leisure — take a walk around Kandy Lake and enjoy the calm evening atmosphere of this charming city
  • Night Stay: Kandy

Day 04Nuwara Eliya — Ambalangoda — Bentota (2 Nights)

  • Breakfast at the hotel and check out
  • Begin the scenic drive from Nuwara Eliya down to the coast toward Bentota (approximately 4–5 hours including stops)
  • The drive descends from cool mountain air to warm tropical coast — the changing landscape through rubber plantations, rice paddies, and fishing villages is fascinating
  • En route stop at Ambalangoda — a small town on the southwest coast famous for its mask-making tradition
  • → Visit a traditional mask workshop to watch craftsmen carve and paint the intricate Kolam and Raksha masks by hand using traditional techniques passed down through generations
  • → These vibrant, colourful masks are used in traditional Sri Lankan dance dramas and healing rituals
  • → The mask museum here is fascinating, and the masks make beautiful and unique souvenirs to bring home

  • → Bentota is known for its wide, golden sandy beaches, calm lagoon waters, and a laid-back, holiday atmosphere
  • → The area has a perfect mix of beach relaxation and water activities, making it ideal for families

  • Morning: Bentota River Safari — one of the most exciting family activities in Sri Lanka
  • → Board a motorised boat and cruise through the mangrove-lined Bentota River and its network of lagoons
  • → Spot a remarkable variety of wildlife in their natural habitat: monitor lizards sunning on the banks, estuarine crocodiles, kingfishers, herons, egrets, purple-faced leaf monkeys in the mangrove trees, and various migratory bird species
  • → The safari also passes through a cinnamon plantation — one of Sri Lanka’s most important spice exports — where you can see cinnamon bark being peeled by hand
  • → A genuinely thrilling and educational experience, especially for children
  • Mid-morning: Visit the Kosgoda Sea Turtle Hatchery — a conservation centre dedicated to protecting Sri Lanka’s endangered sea turtle population
  • → Sri Lanka’s beaches are nesting grounds for five species of sea turtles: Loggerhead, Green, Hawksbill, Leatherback, and Olive Ridley
  • → At the hatchery, conservation workers collect turtle eggs from the beach, incubate them safely, and release the hatchlings into the sea once they are strong enough
  • → Depending on timing, you may get to see tiny hatchlings in holding tanks, or even witness a release into the sea — one of the most magical moments of any Sri Lanka trip
  • → This experience teaches children about conservation in a hands-on, gentle, and memorable way
  • Afternoon: Optional water sports at Bentota Beach (at own cost, can be pre-booked through us)
  • → Jet skiing, windsurfing, water skiing, banana boat rides, snorkelling, and glass-bottom boat rides are all available
  • → Bentota is one of the best water sports destinations in Sri Lanka — suitable for beginners and experienced participants

  • → Explore the beautifully preserved cobblestoned streets inside the fort, lined with colonial-era Dutch buildings now converted into boutique hotels, cafes, galleries, and shops
  • → Galle Lighthouse — the oldest lighthouse in Sri Lanka, located at the southernmost point of the fort ramparts. Great for photos

FAQs

Do Indian citizens need a visa to visit Sri Lanka?

Indian citizens require an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) to enter Sri Lanka. This is an e-visa that can be applied for online at www.eta.gov.lk before your travel date. The process is straightforward and approval typically comes within 1–2 working days. The ETA fee is currently USD 20 per person for tourism purposes and is not included in the package price. When you book with us, we will guide you through the exact steps and documentation required.

How much does a Sri Lanka family tour package cost from India?

Our Sri Lanka Family Tour Package starts at Rs. 52,000/- per person for 6 nights and 7 days (land-only, excluding flights). The final price depends on the number of travellers in your family (larger groups get lower per-person rates), your hotel category preference (standard, boutique, or luxury), travel season, and any add-ons. With flights included from Mumbai, the per-person cost typically ranges from Rs. 70,000 to Rs. 95,000 depending on the season. Contact us for a personalised family quote.

Are international flights included in this Sri Lanka tour package?

Flights are not included by default, as most families prefer to book flights independently to get the best fares. Direct flights from Chennai, Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi, and Hyderabad to Colombo (CMB) are operated by IndiGo, Air India, SriLankan Airlines, and others. Flight time is approximately 1.5 to 2.5 hours depending on your departure city. If you would like us to include flights in your package, we are happy to help find the best options.

Is Sri Lanka safe for Indian families with young children?

Sri Lanka is a very safe and family-friendly destination. The country has a well-developed tourism infrastructure, local people are extremely warm and welcoming toward Indian visitors, and the standard of hygiene at tourist hotels and restaurants is generally good. Paediatric medical facilities are available in Colombo, Kandy, and Galle. The main things to keep in mind for young children are: apply mosquito repellent daily, use sunscreen at beach destinations, and drink only bottled or filtered water throughout the trip.

Can this itinerary be customised for our family?

Absolutely — and we encourage it. We can add a Sigiriya Rock Fortress and Dambulla Cave Temple day, include a wildlife jeep safari at Minneriya or Udawalawe National Park, extend the beach time at Bentota, add whale watching from Mirissa, upgrade to luxury tea estate bungalows in Nuwara Eliya, or include flights from your city. Tell us your family’s ages, interests, and budget and we will redesign the itinerary around you.

What is the best time to visit Sri Lanka with family?

December to April is the best time for this specific itinerary, as it covers the southwest coast (Bentota, Galle) where weather is ideal during these months. Kandy and Nuwara Eliya are pleasant year-round. July to September is also a good time for the hill country and the west coast. We advise avoiding May to June if beach activities are a priority, as the southwest monsoon can bring heavy rains to the coastal areas

Is vegetarian food easily available throughout the Sri Lanka trip?

Yes. Sri Lanka is an excellent destination for vegetarian families. Rice and curry — the staple Sri Lankan meal — typically consists of rice with several vegetable curries, dhal, papadums, and sambol, most of which are naturally vegetarian. Hoppers, string hoppers, and pol roti (coconut flatbread) are also vegetarian. Indian vegetarian food (especially South Indian dishes like idli, dosai, and sambar) is widely available in Kandy and Colombo. We also inform hotels of dietary requirements in advance so your family’s breakfasts always have suitable options.

What is the currency in Sri Lanka and can we pay in Indian Rupees?

Sri Lanka uses the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR). The approximate exchange rate is 1 INR = 3.8 LKR (verify before travel). Indian Rupees (in lower denominations) are accepted in some tourist shops and markets, but it is advisable to carry some LKR for most transactions. ATMs are widely available in Colombo, Kandy, Galle, and Bentota. Credit and debit cards are accepted at most hotels and larger restaurants. We recommend exchanging some currency at the Colombo airport on arrival.

How much walking is involved? Is this itinerary suitable for elderly family members?

The itinerary is generally comfortable for elderly travellers. Most sightseeing involves walking at a relaxed pace with breaks. The Galle Fort rampart walk (1.4 km) and some temple visits involve moderate walking on uneven surfaces. Peradeniya Gardens has paved paths throughout. The Bentota River Safari and turtle hatchery are seated/standing experiences with minimal walking. The one activity that involves significant physical effort is Sigiriya Rock (an optional add-on) — which is a steep 200-metre climb and is not recommended for elderly visitors or young children.
