Overview

Sri Lanka is one of those rare destinations that gives you everything in one trip. Ancient rock fortresses, misty tea-covered hillsides, leopards in the wild, turquoise beaches, colonial seaside towns, and warm people who make you feel welcome from the moment you arrive. For couples, it is genuinely one of the most romantic and varied destinations in Asia.

Itinerary

Day 01Arrive in Colombo — Drive to Sigiriya via Pinnawala

You land at Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo, and from the moment you step outside, Sri Lanka announces itself — warm air, green everywhere, and the quiet hum of a country that runs at its own unhurried pace. Your private driver will meet you at arrivals and transfer you in a comfortable AC vehicle.

The drive toward Sigiriya takes you through the heart of Sri Lanka’s countryside — past rice paddies, coconut groves, and roadside fruit stalls where fresh king coconuts cost almost nothing. The first major stop is Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, where rescued and orphaned baby elephants are raised in a large natural sanctuary. You can watch them bathe in the river, feed calves, and observe the herd up close. For most couples, this is an unexpectedly moving first experience.

Arrive in Sigiriya by evening, check in to your hotel, and settle in. Tomorrow is one of the most dramatic days of the trip.

Today’s Schedule:

  • Land at Colombo (CMB) and meet your private driver at arrivals
  • Drive toward Sigiriya — approximately 4.5 hours with stops
  • Visit Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage — elephant bathing and feeding
  • Stop for fresh king coconut water at a roadside stall — a Sri Lanka essential
  • Arrive at Sigiriya hotel and check in
  • Free evening — explore the hotel grounds or relax after the journey
  • Overnight stay in Sigiriya

Day 02 Sigiriya Rock Fortress + Dambulla Cave Temple

Today is one of the most visually impressive days of the entire trip, and it combines two of Sri Lanka’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites in a single day.

The morning starts with Sigiriya Rock Fortress — a 200-metre volcanic rock that rises straight out of the jungle like a natural skyscraper, with a 5th-century palace complex built on its summit by King Kasyapa. The climb involves staircases, mirror-wall walkways, and the famous Sigiriya Damsels — ancient frescoes painted onto the rock face that have survived for over 1,500 years. The view from the top is extraordinary: jungle in every direction, with nothing but sky above you. Most couples say this is the most memorable single moment of the trip.

After lunch, visit the Dambulla Cave Temple — a complex of five ancient caves cut into a rocky hilltop, filled with 153 statues of the Buddha and elaborate ceiling paintings covering every surface. It is one of the best-preserved cave temple complexes in Asia, and the atmosphere inside is genuinely ancient and peaceful.

Today’s Schedule:

  • Early morning departure for Sigiriya Rock Fortress
  • Climb Sigiriya — staircases, mirror wall, Heavenly Damsels frescoes, and summit palace views
  • Panoramic views of the Sri Lankan jungle from the top of Lion Rock
  • Lunch at a local restaurant
  • Drive to Dambulla Cave Temple — UNESCO World Heritage Site
  • Explore five cave temples with 153 Buddha statues and ancient ceiling paintings
  • Return to Sigiriya hotel
  • Overnight stay in Sigiriya

Day 03 Matale Spice Garden + Kandy Cultural Show + Temple of the Tooth

Today you travel from Sigiriya to Kandy — Sri Lanka’s hill capital and the last royal city of the ancient kings. The drive takes you through the Matale district, which is worth a stop on its own.

En route, visit a traditional Matale spice garden — a working farm where cinnamon, cardamom, pepper, nutmeg, and cloves are grown and processed. A guide walks you through the spice trees, explains their uses in Ayurvedic medicine, and offers you samples of everything. Couples usually end up buying half the shop. Sri Lanka is one of the world’s top spice producers and this stop is one of the most aromatic and enjoyable on the route.

Arrive in Kandy and check in to your hotel. In the late afternoon, visit the Temple of the Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa) — the most sacred Buddhist site in Sri Lanka and home to a tooth relic of the Buddha, kept in a golden casket deep within the temple. The temple is beautifully decorated and the atmosphere during puja (prayer ceremony) is deeply moving.

End the evening with the Kandy Cultural Show — a 45-minute performance of traditional Sri Lankan dance, drumming, and fire-walking. It is lively, colourful, and completely different from anything else on the trip.

Today’s Schedule:

  • Check out from Sigiriya and drive to Kandy — approximately 2.5 hours
  • Stop at a Matale Spice Garden — guided tour of Sri Lanka’s famous spice farms
  • Arrive in Kandy and check in to hotel
  • Visit Temple of the Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa) — Sri Lanka’s most sacred Buddhist temple
  • Evening Kandy Cultural Show — traditional dance, drumming, and fire-walking performance
  • Overnight stay in Kandy

Day 04 Kandy City + Peradeniya Gardens — Drive to Nuwara Eliya

A relaxed morning in Kandy before the drive up into the hills. Start with a walk around the beautiful Kandy Lake — an artificial lake built by the last Sri Lankan king in 1807, surrounded by a scenic promenade that is lovely in the early morning.

Next, visit the Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens — one of the finest botanical gardens in Asia, with 4,000 species of plants spread over 60 hectares. The gardens include a giant fig tree that covers an enormous area, a bamboo collection, an orchid house, and palm avenues that have been photographed for over a century. It is a genuinely beautiful place for couples to spend an unhurried morning.

After lunch, drive up to Nuwara Eliya — one of the most scenic road journeys in Sri Lanka. The landscape changes dramatically as you climb — tea estates replace the lowland jungle, the air becomes cooler and crisper, and British-colonial bungalows dot the hillsides. Nuwara Eliya sits at 1,900 metres and is nicknamed ‘Little England’ for its colonial architecture, rose gardens, and surprisingly cool weather.

Today’s Schedule:

  • Morning walk around Kandy Lake and the lakeside promenade
  • Visit Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens — 4,000 plant species across 60 hectares
  • Lunch in Kandy
  • Scenic drive to Nuwara Eliya through tea country — approximately 2 hours
  • Check in to hotel in Nuwara Eliya
  • Evening walk through Nuwara Eliya town — colonial market, flower stalls, and tea shops
  •  Overnight stay in Nuwara Eliya

Day 05Tea Estates + Ramayana Trail + Hakgala Gardens — Drive toward Yala

Nuwara Eliya is the heart of Sri Lanka’s tea country, and this morning gives you a proper immersion in it. Start with a visit to a working tea factory — a guided tour that takes you from the fresh leaf to the dried, sorted, and graded tea you know, with tastings at the end. The scent of drying tea leaves inside the factory is something you will recognise for the rest of your life.

Next, two stops with deep cultural significance. The Sita Amman Temple is one of the most visited Ramayana-related sites in Sri Lanka — believed to be built at the location where Sita was held captive by Ravana. The temple sits beside a stream with naturally occurring footprints in the rock, and the setting is both peaceful and fascinating for couples with a love of mythology and history.

The Hakgala Botanical Gardens, just outside Nuwara Eliya, is believed in local tradition to be part of the garden from which Hanuman brought the Sanjeevani herb. Its rose collection and mountain views make it one of the most romantic gardens in Sri Lanka.

After lunch, begin the drive down toward Yala in the southeast. The landscape shifts again — from cool green hills to dry scrub and jungle. Arrive at your Yala jungle camp or hotel by evening.

Today’s Schedule:

  • Visit a working tea factory in Nuwara Eliya — guided tour and tasting session
  • Sita Amman Temple — significant Ramayana pilgrimage site in the hills
  • Hakgala Botanical Gardens — rose collection and mountain views
  • Lunch in Nuwara Eliya
  • Drive to Yala National Park — approximately 4 hours
  • Check in to jungle hotel or wildlife resort near Yala
  • Evening briefing by your naturalist on tomorrow’s safari
  • Overnight stay near Yala

Day 06Yala National Park Safari + Drive to Galle

The early morning belongs to the jungle. Your certified naturalist guide and jeep driver will take you deep into Yala National Park for a 3–4 hour morning safari in the best wildlife period of the day.

Yala is Sri Lanka’s most famous national park and home to an extraordinary variety of wildlife. The Sri Lankan leopard is the signature animal — Yala has the highest density of wild leopards of any national park on earth. Other regularly sighted animals include Sri Lankan elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, water buffalo, spotted deer, peacocks, and a remarkable diversity of birds. Even if you are not a wildlife enthusiast going in, it is almost impossible not to be completely gripped by the experience.

After the safari and breakfast, check out and drive west toward Galle — one of the most beautiful small cities in Asia. Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a 17th-century Dutch colonial fortification that still functions as a living city. Cobblestone streets, whitewashed colonial buildings, boutique hotels, art galleries, and spice shops are all contained within the old fort walls. Walk the ramparts at sunset for one of the most romantic views in Sri Lanka — the Indian Ocean stretching to the horizon on one side, and the fort city glowing golden on the other.

Today’s Schedule:

  • Early morning jeep safari in Yala National Park (3–4 hours) with certified naturalist
  • Wildlife spotting: leopards, elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, and birds
  • Breakfast and hotel check-out
  • Drive from Yala to Galle — approximately 3 hours
  • Explore Galle Fort — Dutch colonial walls, cobblestone streets, lighthouse
  • Walk the fort ramparts at sunset — the most romantic spot in Galle
  • Check in to hotel in Galle or Bentota
  • Overnight stay in Galle or Bentota

Day 07Bentota Beach Day + Lagoon Boat Ride + Turtle Hatchery

Today is the most unhurried day of the trip, and deliberately so. After days of temples, climbing, driving, and wildlife, Bentota gives you permission to simply stop and be.

Bentota is Sri Lanka’s most celebrated beach destination for couples — a long stretch of golden sand facing a warm, calm lagoon, with beach resorts, water sports, and coconut trees lining the shore. The Bentota Lagoon is one of the most beautiful in Sri Lanka, with mangrove channels, egrets fishing in the shallows, and river otters occasionally spotted in the calmer inlets.

The morning starts with a lagoon boat ride through the mangroves — a peaceful, slow journey that feels completely removed from the rest of the world. After the boat ride, visit the Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery, where rescued sea turtle eggs are protected and hatchlings are released into the sea every night. Meeting the baby turtles is one of those quiet, unexpectedly touching experiences that stays with you.

Spend the afternoon at the beach. Swim, lie in the sun, read, or book a couples massage at the hotel spa. The evening is completely yours.

Today’s Schedule:

  • Morning lagoon boat ride through the Bentota mangroves
  • Visit Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery — sea turtle rescue and hatchling release programme
  • Lunch at a beachside restaurant
  • Afternoon free at Bentota Beach — swim, sunbathe, or book optional water sports
  • Optional: couples spa or Ayurvedic massage at the hotel
  • Sunset on Bentota Beach
  • Overnight stay in Bentota

Day 08 Drive to Colombo + City Tour + Departure

Check out from your Bentota hotel after breakfast and drive north to Colombo for your flight home. The drive takes approximately 2 hours along the coastal highway, with the Indian Ocean accompanying you on the left.

If your flight is in the afternoon or evening, there is time for a Colombo city tour. Colombo is a city of contrasts — colonial-era buildings alongside modern towers, a vibrant waterfront at Galle Face Green, and excellent shopping at the Pettah bazaar or Colombo City Centre mall.

Pick up last-minute souvenirs — Ceylon tea, handmade batik, cinnamon, and moonstone jewellery are the classic buys. Your driver will then transfer you to Bandaranaike International Airport with comfortable time before your flight.

You will board your flight to India carrying something that is hard to put into words: the particular feeling of a trip that gave you everything it promised.

Today’s Schedule:

  • Breakfast and hotel check-out in Bentota
  • Scenic coastal drive to Colombo — approximately 2 hours
  • Colombo city tour: Galle Face Green, Independence Square, Pettah Market
  • Last-minute shopping — Ceylon tea, batik, cinnamon, moonstones
  • Lunch in Colombo (if time permits)
  • Private transfer to Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB)
  • Departure — with stories worth telling for a very long time

FAQs

Do Indian nationals need a visa to visit Sri Lanka?

Yes. Indian passport holders need an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) to enter Sri Lanka. The ETA is applied for online and is typically approved within 24–48 hours. The fee is approximately USD 20–35 per person. fleego assists with the ETA application process as part of your booking. There is no visa on arrival for Indian nationals.

What is the Sri Lanka tour cost for a couple from India?

The land package starts at approximately ₹60,000 per person, which means around ₹1,20,000 for a couple. This covers 7 nights accommodation with daily breakfast, private AC transport, English-speaking guide, all entry tickets, safari, boat ride, and 24/7 support. International flights from India to Colombo add approximately ₹12,000–22,000 per person depending on your city and travel dates. We provide a detailed, itemised quote when you share your travel dates and hotel preferences.

Are international flights included in this package?

No, flights are not included in the base land package. However, we can easily add round-trip airfare from Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, or Kochi to Colombo. Just mention it when you enquire and we will create a complete India to Sri Lanka couple package including flights.

What is the best time of year to do this 8-day Sri Lanka honeymoon package?

December to March is the best overall window for this full-island itinerary — the southwest coast (Bentota, Galle) is dry, Yala safari conditions are excellent, and the weather in Kandy and Sigiriya is pleasant. April to June is great for the hill country and Nuwara Eliya specifically. We will advise on the best dates for your specific travel window when you enquire.

Is there a chance of spotting leopards at Yala?

Yes, and the chances are genuinely good. Yala National Park has the highest density of wild leopards of any national park in the world, and morning jeep safaris have a high rate of sightings. Our assigned naturalist guides know the current leopard territory and recent sighting patterns. While wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed, leopard sightings are a common and celebrated part of the Yala experience.

Is this a private trip or a group tour?

This is a fully private trip. You will have a private AC vehicle, your own driver, and your own guide throughout the 8 days. You will never share a vehicle, jeep, or hotel transfer with other travellers. The safari at Yala uses a shared jeep per booking (as per park regulations), but your guide and all other transport is exclusively yours.

Can we customise the itinerary for our specific preferences?

Completely. This is a suggested itinerary, not a fixed template. You can add or remove days, swap activities, change the hotel category, include a whale watching trip near Mirissa, add a hot air balloon ride over Sigiriya, or request a private beach dinner. We build every Sri Lanka couple package around what the two of you actually want. Just tell us your preferences when you enquire.

Is Sri Lanka safe for couples travelling from India?

Yes. Sri Lanka is a safe and welcoming destination for tourists, including Indian couples. The country has a well-developed tourism infrastructure and Indian visitors are especially welcome given the cultural and historical ties between the two countries. Our on-ground team is available throughout your trip for any assistance

Is Indian food available in Sri Lanka?

Yes, very easily. Sri Lankan cuisine is closely related to South Indian cooking and shares many spices, lentil dishes, and rice-based meals. South Indian food (dosa, idli, sambar) is widely available across the country. Most hotels on this route also offer a North Indian menu. Finding vegetarian options is never a problem for Indian couples travelling in Sri Lanka.

What currency is used in Sri Lanka? Can we use Indian Rupees?

The local currency is the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR). Indian Rupees are not accepted in Sri Lanka. You can exchange Indian Rupees to LKR at the airport or at authorised money changers in Colombo, Kandy, and other cities. Credit and debit cards are accepted at hotels and larger restaurants, but smaller shops and roadside stalls are cash-only. We recommend carrying some LKR cash throughout the trip.

What should we pack for this trip?

Pack light, breathable clothing for the coastal and lowland areas (Colombo, Bentota, Galle, Yala). Carry warm layers or a light jacket for Nuwara Eliya, where evenings can be cold. Comfortable walking shoes are essential for Sigiriya, Dambulla, and the botanical gardens. A modest scarf or wrap for temple visits, insect repellent for Yala and coastal areas, sunscreen, and a basic first aid kit are recommended.

Can this Sri Lanka couple package be extended or shortened?

Yes, completely. If you have more time, we can add a day in Colombo, an extra beach day in Bentota, a trip to Trincomalee on the east coast, or a whale watching trip from Mirissa. If you have fewer days, we can create a tighter 5-night or 6-night version covering the highlights you care about most. Just tell us your available days and we will build the right plan.
