Overview

Sri Lanka — the Pearl of the Indian Ocean — is one of the most rewarding and affordable international travel destinations for Indian friend groups. Packed into a compact island are lush green hill stations, ancient temples, tropical beaches, wildlife sanctuaries, and vibrant city streets. Best of all, you can experience all of this in just 4 nights and 5 days.

Itinerary

Day 01Arrival in Colombo → Optional Pinnawala → Kandy

Your Sri Lanka friends tour begins the moment you land at Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo. Your Fleego guide and private air-conditioned vehicle will be waiting to receive you and start the journey towards Kandy — Sri Lanka’s charming cultural capital nestled in the central hills.

Optional Stop: Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage

If your group arrives early enough, we highly recommend stopping at the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage on the way to Kandy. Located about 90 km from Colombo, Pinnawala is home to one of the world’s largest herds of captive elephants — over 80 elephants of all ages, including adorable baby elephants. Watch them bathe in the Maha Oya River, feed them, and observe them up close in this open sanctuary. It is a genuinely heartwarming experience and a fantastic start to the trip.

Transfer to Kandy

Continue the scenic drive to Kandy, a UNESCO World Heritage city set around an artificial lake, surrounded by misty green hills. The drive itself is beautiful — winding roads through rubber and tea plantations give you your first real taste of Sri Lanka’s stunning landscape. Arrive in Kandy by evening, check in to your hotel, and enjoy the cool mountain air after the journey.

  • Arrive at Colombo Airport — meet your guide and private vehicle
  • Optional: Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage — feed and watch Sri Lanka’s famous elephant herd
  • Scenic 3–4 hour drive to Kandy through rubber and tea plantations
  • Check in to your hotel in Kandy
  • Evening at leisure — explore Kandy Lake or the nearby town market
  • Overnight Stay: Kandy

Day 02Kandy Full Day — Temples, Gardens & Cultural Dance

Kandy is the cultural heart of Sri Lanka and today you will experience the very best it has to offer. From sacred temples to royal botanical gardens and a spectacular evening cultural show, Day 2 is packed with experiences that will stay with your group long after the trip ends.

Upper Lake Drive & Kandy Town

Start the day with a scenic drive along the Upper Lake Drive, which circles the beautiful Kandy Lake and offers lovely views of the surrounding hills and the Temple of the Tooth. Take a stroll through Kandy Market Square — a lively, colorful market where locals buy fresh produce, spices, and everything in between. It is the perfect place to soak in everyday Sri Lankan life and maybe pick up some local snacks.

Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa)

This is one of the most sacred and significant Buddhist temples in the entire world. The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is believed to house a tooth of the Lord Buddha himself, making it a deeply revered pilgrimage site for Buddhists across Asia. The golden-roofed temple is stunning in its architecture, and the ritual chanting and incense-filled corridors create an atmosphere unlike anything you will encounter elsewhere. Even for non-religious visitors, the spiritual energy and historical significance of this place are deeply moving.

Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens

Just 6 km from Kandy city centre lies the magnificent Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens — one of the finest botanical gardens in Asia, spread across 147 acres of landscaped grounds. Established in 1821 during British rule, the gardens are home to over 4,000 species of plants, including a spectacular avenue of royal palms, giant bamboo groves, a 350-year-old Java fig tree with an enormous canopy, orchid houses, and beautifully manicured flower gardens. It is an ideal spot for a relaxed afternoon stroll, group photos, and just unwinding amidst nature.

Kandyan Cultural Dance Show

End your day in Kandy with a vibrant Kandyan Cultural Dance Show — a traditional performance that brings together several distinct Sri Lankan dance forms, including the famous Kandyan dance (Ves dance), fire walking, and fire breathing. The colorful costumes, rhythmic drumming, and incredible acrobatic performances make this one of the most exciting evening activities in Sri Lanka. It is a high-energy, visually stunning show that your group will be talking about for days.

  • Scenic Upper Lake Drive with views of Kandy Lake and the hills
  • Explore Kandy Market Square — local produce, spices, and street food
  • Visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic — one of the holiest Buddhist shrines in Asia
  • Stroll through Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens — 147 acres of stunning flora
  • Evening: Kandyan Cultural Dance Show — fire walking, acrobatics & traditional drumming
  • Overnight Stay: Kandy

Day 03Kandy → Bentota — Beach, Turtles & River Cruise

Today you swap the cool green hills of Kandy for the warm tropical coastline of Bentota — one of Sri Lanka’s most beautiful and laid-back beach destinations. The drive from Kandy to Bentota (approximately 3.5 hours) takes you through the scenic lowland countryside, passing rubber plantations, coconut groves, and traditional villages before you arrive at the sparkling Indian Ocean.

Sea Turtle Hatchery

Your first stop on the Bentota coast is a Sea Turtle Hatchery — a wonderful conservation project where endangered sea turtle eggs are collected from nearby beaches, incubated safely, and the hatchlings are raised before being released into the ocean. You will get to see turtles of all sizes — from tiny hatchlings to adult turtles — up close. Many hatcheries allow you to hold a baby turtle and even participate in releasing them into the sea. It is one of the most heartwarming and unique wildlife experiences in Sri Lanka, and something your group will absolutely love.

 Bentota River Boat Ride

After the turtle hatchery, enjoy a scenic boat ride on the calm, winding Bentota River. The boat glides through dense mangrove forests, past traditional fishing villages, and alongside local bird life — kingfishers, herons, and monitor lizards are commonly spotted. The ride is peaceful, relaxing, and gives you a completely different perspective of Sri Lanka away from the beaches and tourist sites. This boat ride is included in your package.

Bentota Beach — Free Time

The rest of the afternoon is yours to enjoy at Bentota Beach — one of Sri Lanka’s most beautiful and well-maintained beaches. The warm turquoise water, clean golden sand, and gentle waves make it ideal for swimming, sunbathing, or simply sitting under a palm tree with a fresh coconut. For the more adventurous members of your group, a range of exciting water sports are available at an additional cost — jet skiing, banana boat rides, windsurfing, parasailing, and more.

  • Breakfast and checkout from Kandy hotel
  • Scenic 3.5-hour drive to Bentota through Sri Lanka’s lush lowlands
  • Visit Sea Turtle Hatchery — see and hold baby turtles, watch them released into the sea
  • Bentota River Boat Ride — mangrove forests, birds & peaceful backwaters (included)
  • Free afternoon at Bentota Beach — swim, relax, or explore
  • Optional: Water sports — jet skiing, banana boat, parasailing (at extra cost)
  • Overnight Stay: Bentota

Day 04Bentota → Colombo City Exploration

After a leisurely morning and breakfast at your Bentota hotel, it is time to head to Colombo — Sri Lanka’s buzzing capital city. A 1.5-hour drive along the scenic Southern Expressway brings you into a completely different world: from beachside calm to city energy. Colombo is a fascinating mix of colonial-era architecture, modern skyscrapers, vibrant bazaars, and a thriving café and restaurant scene.

Pettah Bazaar

Your Colombo experience starts at Pettah Bazaar — the city’s oldest and most chaotic (in the best way) market district. Walking through Pettah’s narrow lanes feels like a sensory overload: rows of shops selling everything from spices, fabrics, and electronics to street food and fresh produce. Each street in Pettah is dedicated to a specific trade — there is a street for hardware, a street for textiles, a street for gems. Bargaining is part of the culture here and is half the fun.

Colombo’s Temples & Heritage Sites

Colombo has several beautiful temples that reflect the city’s multicultural heritage. Visit the Gangaramaya Temple — one of the most important Buddhist temples in Colombo, known for its eclectic mix of architectural styles (Sri Lankan, Thai, Indian, and Chinese influences all in one building) and its fascinating museum collection of thousands of donated religious and cultural artifacts. Nearby, the Seema Malaka Temple floats serenely on Beira Lake and is a beautiful spot for photography. Colombo also has several Hindu kovils, mosques, and colonial-era churches that reflect the city’s diverse cultural history.

BMICH & Colonial Colombo

Drive past the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH) — a stunning example of modern Sri Lankan architecture and a major landmark in the city. Continue through Colombo’s colonial-era Cinnamon Gardens neighborhood, where tree-lined boulevards, Victorian-era bungalows, the Colombo National Museum, and the beautiful Viharamahadevi Park (Colombo’s largest public park) come together in one leafy, atmospheric district.

Galle Face Green & Free Evening

End your Colombo sightseeing at Galle Face Green — a long ocean-front promenade that is the social heart of Colombo. Watch the sunset over the Indian Ocean, try local street food from the many vendors (isso vadai — prawn fritters — are a must), and enjoy the lively atmosphere. The evening is completely free for your group — whether you want to explore the upscale Colombo City Centre mall, dine at a rooftop restaurant, or discover the city’s growing craft beer and café scene on your own.

  • Leisurely breakfast at Bentota hotel
  • Drive to Colombo via the Southern Expressway (approx. 1.5 hours)
  • Explore Pettah Bazaar — Sri Lanka’s most vibrant street market
  • Visit Gangaramaya Temple & Seema Malaka floating temple on Beira Lake
  • Drive past BMICH and through colonial Cinnamon Gardens
  • Sunset at Galle Face Green — ocean views and local street food
  • Free evening — shopping, rooftop dining, or café hopping in Colombo
  • Overnight Stay: Colombo

FAQs

Do Indian citizens need a visa for Sri Lanka?

Yes, Indian passport holders require a Sri Lanka Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) — an online visa that is quick and straightforward to apply for. The application takes about 15 minutes at eta.gov.lk and is typically approved within 24–48 hours. The visa fee is approximately USD 35 (subject to change). Our fleego team can guide you through the entire application process when you book your package — just ask us and we will walk you through it step by step.

What is the best time to visit Sri Lanka for a friends tour?

December to April is the best time for this particular itinerary, which covers the West and South coasts (Bentota and Colombo) along with the central hills (Kandy). During this period, the weather is dry and sunny, the beaches are calm, and the entire island is at its most vibrant. If you’re traveling between June and September, Sri Lanka’s East Coast (Trincomalee or Arugam Bay) is a great alternative for beach days, while Kandy and the cultural triangle remain beautiful year-round.

What is the Sri Lanka trip cost from India for this package?

The land package starts from ₹36,000 per person, which includes 4 nights accommodation with daily breakfast, a private AC vehicle with driver throughout, the Bentota river boat ride, and travel assistance. International airfare and Sri Lanka visa fees are additional. Return flights from Mumbai, Delhi, or Chennai to Colombo typically cost ₹10,000–₹20,000 per person depending on season and booking lead time. The total Sri Lanka trip cost from India for this 5-day package typically ranges from ₹48,000–₹65,000 per person all-inclusive.

Is this itinerary suitable for a couple as well?

Absolutely. While this package is marketed for friend groups, it works equally well as a Sri Lanka honeymoon package or a romantic couple’s trip. Sri Lanka has all the ingredients for a romantic getaway — scenic hill country drives, candlelit beachside dinners at Bentota, boat rides through quiet mangrove backwaters, and peaceful sunset views at Galle Face Green. We can easily customize the package with a more romantic hotel selection and private experiences.

Is the package fully private or do we travel with other groups?

Your vehicle is 100% private and exclusively for your group throughout the entire trip. You will not share your transport with any other travelers. The sightseeing at each destination is self-guided with your driver, allowing your group to move at your own pace. You can spend more time where you love it and move on quickly from what doesn’t interest you as much.

Can we include Sigiriya Rock or Yala Safari in this itinerary?

Yes, these are two of the most popular add-ons for Sri Lanka group tours from India. Sigiriya Rock Fortress (a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic landmarks) and Yala National Park Safari (famous for leopard sightings) can both be added as extra days or day trips to this itinerary. We recommend adding at least 1–2 extra days if you want to include either of these. Contact us when booking and we will adjust the plan accordingly.

What kind of food is available in Sri Lanka for Indian travelers?

Indian travelers will feel very comfortable with the food in Sri Lanka. Sri Lankan cuisine shares many similarities with South Indian food — rice and curry is the staple meal, dosas (hoppers), sambol, and lentil dishes are everywhere. Coconut features heavily in the cooking, much like Kerala cuisine. Most restaurants catering to tourists offer both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options. Indian restaurants (especially South Indian food) are easily found in Colombo and Kandy. Fresh seafood at Bentota beach restaurants is an absolute must-try for non-vegetarians.

How many people can this package accommodate?

This package works best for groups of 4 to 12 people. For groups of 4–7 people, a Toyota HiAce or similar minivan is provided. For groups of 8–12, a larger coach or two vehicles are arranged. For groups larger than 12, please contact us directly for a customized group tour plan with appropriate vehicle and hotel arrangements. Larger groups often get better per-person pricing, so it is worth checking with us regardless of your group size.

Can we add water sports at Bentota or other adventure activities?

Yes! Bentota is one of Sri Lanka’s top water sports destinations. Jet skiing, banana boat rides, windsurfing, parasailing, and kayaking are all available at the beach and can be booked on the spot or pre-arranged through us. For adventure-loving groups, we can also add white water rafting on the Kelani River at Kitulgala, surf lessons at Arugam Bay, or zip-lining and ATV rides in various locations. Just mention your interests when you enquire and we will include them in your custom quote.
