Start the day with a scenic drive along the Upper Lake Drive, which circles the beautiful Kandy Lake and offers lovely views of the surrounding hills and the Temple of the Tooth. Take a stroll through Kandy Market Square — a lively, colorful market where locals buy fresh produce, spices, and everything in between. It is the perfect place to soak in everyday Sri Lankan life and maybe pick up some local snacks.
Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa)
This is one of the most sacred and significant Buddhist temples in the entire world. The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is believed to house a tooth of the Lord Buddha himself, making it a deeply revered pilgrimage site for Buddhists across Asia. The golden-roofed temple is stunning in its architecture, and the ritual chanting and incense-filled corridors create an atmosphere unlike anything you will encounter elsewhere. Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens
Just 6 km from Kandy city centre lies the magnificent Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens — one of the finest botanical gardens in Asia, spread across 147 acres of landscaped grounds. Established in 1821 during British rule, the gardens are home to over 4,000 species of plants, including a spectacular avenue of royal palms, giant bamboo groves, a 350-year-old Java fig tree with an enormous canopy, orchid houses, and beautifully manicured flower gardens. Kandyan Cultural Dance Show

Your first stop on the Bentota coast is a Sea Turtle Hatchery — a wonderful conservation project where endangered sea turtle eggs are collected from nearby beaches, incubated safely, and the hatchlings are raised before being released into the ocean. You will get to see turtles of all sizes — from tiny hatchlings to adult turtles — up close. Many hatcheries allow you to hold a baby turtle and even participate in releasing them into the sea. Colombo is a fascinating mix of colonial-era architecture, modern skyscrapers, vibrant bazaars, and a thriving café and restaurant scene.
Pettah Bazaar
Your Colombo experience starts at Pettah Bazaar — the city’s oldest and most chaotic (in the best way) market district. Walking through Pettah’s narrow lanes feels like a sensory overload: rows of shops selling everything from spices, fabrics, and electronics to street food and fresh produce. Each street in Pettah is dedicated to a specific trade — there is a street for hardware, a street for textiles, a street for gems. Bargaining is part of the culture here and is half the fun.
Colombo’s Temples & Heritage Sites
Colombo has several beautiful temples that reflect the city’s multicultural heritage. Visit the Gangaramaya Temple — one of the most important Buddhist temples in Colombo, known for its eclectic mix of architectural styles (Sri Lankan, Thai, Indian, and Chinese influences all in one building) and its fascinating museum collection of thousands of donated religious and cultural artifacts.
