Day 5 is your full day in Bangkok, and it is one of the richest single days of the entire trip. Bangkok’s temples are not just tourist attractions — they are active places of worship that have been central to Thai life for centuries, and being inside them is a completely different experience from reading about them.
The first stop is the Grand Palace complex and Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the Emerald Buddha) — the most sacred site in Thailand and one of the most ornate temple complexes in all of Asia. The Emerald Buddha, carved from a single block of jade-green jasper and housed in a spectacular golden throne hall, has been the spiritual protector of the Thai kingdom since the 18th century. The surrounding palace buildings are decorated with mirror-work, gold leaf, and intricate murals depicting the Ramayana epic.
From the Grand Palace, walk to Wat Pho — Bangkok’s oldest and largest temple, home to the famous 46-metre Reclining Buddha covered in gold leaf. Wat Pho is also the birthplace of traditional Thai massage, and the temple runs an excellent massage school on the grounds. A 30-minute foot massage here is a perfect way to rest between sightseeing.
After lunch at a local riverside restaurant, visit Wat Traimit, home to the world’s largest solid gold Buddha statue — a 3-metre, 5.5-tonne figure cast entirely in solid gold and discovered only in 1955 when the plaster covering it cracked during a move. The afternoon includes time at the Gems Gallery, one of Bangkok’s most visited jewellery showrooms, before a free evening to explore Bangkok at your own pace.
